Ida B. Wells
Mantra: "Turn the light of truth upon them”
Ida B. Wells committed her life to revealing American society’s lack of government accountability as white supremacist mob rule. Sound familiar? Co-founding her own newspaper and bringing attention to the lynchings of her community members her well-researched and brave writings revealed that the practice of lynching, purportedly to protect white women from rape was a strategy of terrorism to allow whites to take over Black businesses and to sexually violate Black women with impunity. When she was run out of town, she spoke at meetings of Black women’s organizations around the United States and raised money to publish her own pamphlets. She founded an international anti-lynching organziation because she knew the United States did not have the capacity to hold itself accountable without pressure from international trade partners. What is the power of the truth and insight you have gained through this process. As we chant “Turn the light of truth upon them” in honor of Ida B. Wells, TURN UP. Your truth is as necessary right now as it could ever possibly be.
