Joseph Beam
Mantra: "I dare myself to dream."
Joseph Beam dared himself to dream. He had a dream, not only that Black gay men could create an anthology of their own writing but that Black men could transform the conditions of the entire community by loving other Black men and themselves. And so he asked the people who inspired him (Audre Lorde, Barbara Smith and Cherrie Moraga to name a few) to support him in taking action towards his dream. Today as we chant “I dare myself to dream,” we are encouraging you to allow yourself to vision beyond reaction. We are inviting you to give space to your most daring and vulnerable dreams for yourself and your communities.
