Claudia Jones
Mantra: "We feel no guilt."
Claudia Jones, a genius born in Trinidad immigrated to New York City with her family as a young child. She became a worker at an early age because her mother was ill and unable to work for many years. She saw first-hand the injustice of capitalism and became a member of the Communist Youth League and before long she was the editor of their newspaper. Claudia Jones wrote about the labor of Black women and the specific injustices they faced with depth and power. And she was sent to prison and eventually deported as part of McCarthy’s criminalization of communism. At her trial, speaking on behalf of herself and her comrades she did not deny her activities and writing for economic justice. In fact she stood by them once again publically saying “we feel no guilt,” and expressing her pride in her work for economic justice for all. As we repeat today’s mantra we encourage you to release the judgments of the world and fully accept your purpose and vision and the change you are working on this world.
