Harriet Tubman
Mantra: "My people are free."
Harriet Tubman was a shapeshifter and visionary who made the impossible possible. Ancestor to all of us and especially to those of us who identify as Black, women, disabled, and freedom seekers. Harriet Tubman understood that the frontal lobe epilepsy she sustained when an overseer bashed her head in became a portal for insight. The core of that insight? Freedom. That freedom was present, possible and more powerful than the structures that constrained Black people through slavery. And she lived her life accordingly even when the people around her could not imagine the freedom she saw. So as we repeat Harriet Tubman’s mantra “My people are free!” may we remember the freedom that already exists for our people and our lives and allow ourselves to act accordingly.
