Bayard Rustin
Mantra: "The power of love in the world is the greatest power existing."
Bayard Rustin is best known as the organizer of the epic March on Washington. A lifelong peace activist, Rustin is the person who introduced Martin Luther King Jr. to the philosophy of non-violence. We honor Bayard Rustin as a Black gay man, athlete, singer and core figure in the US Civil Rights and Peace movements. Bayard Rustin said: “The power of love in the world is the greatest power existing.” As someone with a profoundly tactical analysis of power and a life of putting direct action to work to put pressure on the government, Bayard's analysis of power can encourage us to trust the transformative potential of our love for ourselves and each other. As we breathe together and throughout the day, notice any form of power that might appear to be more powerful than love and remember what Bayard Rustin taught us!
