In 1970 June Jordan spent more than a month in Mississippi shadowing Fannie Lou Hamer and interviewing people involved in the local movement for Black freedom and dignity in the state. This section is designed to help you think about your specific context. If racial violence and fascist governance is the measure, we all live in Mississippi now. (In fact one of the activists featured in the article predicted that and pointed out that everyone needed to learn from the responses of Black people in Mississippi). But for Jordan it was important to depict Mississippi as more than a space of death. She highlighted the life-giving practices of Black visionaries.
