an in-person BIPOC Writing Intensive (Durham, NC)
.
Join us for Daughter Rhymes With…a series of reflective writing intensives in Spring 2024. Since 2016 Alexis has emphasized that daughtering, like mothering is labor that can exist beyond gender binaries and this is a gender-inclusive space for BIPOC. This is a daughtering journey where we seek to discover the right questions for ourselves, for our now; like what happens when we search for (our mother’s) gardens and keep finding graves? And what would a visionary daughter look like where the abundance of our daughtering labor, the assumptions constructing the labor of daughtering, could be transformed into revolutionary potential that provokes freedom right at the site where bondage is supposed to be reproduced.
(The June workshop (not an intensive) is June 16, 2024.)

***a message from Sangodare***
Alexis’s in-person living room poetry and writing facilitation has transformed many lives in Durham. Some of the young children that attended have finished college now and I can see the fruit. But since 2018 Alexis has offered most of her workshops online to a growing community around the world. During COVID she shut down in-person workshops completely. But I want it to begin again.
.
The deal is: Alexis is happy to offer writing workshops and facilitation if it can be easier, more beneficial and more impactful than the online writing intensives she offers AND when all she has to do is show up instead of building and holding the space, and hosting AND facilitating. This is the standard because this is what will allow it to be sustainable. And it needs to be sustainable, especially while she continues to write books on books on books AND tour with her forthcoming biography of Audre Lorde. And We are ready now.
.
We get to be a team of hosts and participants. And as we participants deepen OUR commitment, Alexis can deepen HER investment in us. So, I’m taking it on. I get to invite some of you who seem to be deeply committed to your own reflective writing practice AND Alexis’s facilitation and who are BIPOC, to register for our reflective writing intensives/rituals of preparation and liberation taking place May 4-5, 2024 (the weekend before Mother’s Day weekend) and a workshop (with a meal included) on Father's Day, June 16th both in Durham, NC.
Will you join us?
I think of this as a once a year opportunity for each of us to deepen our own writing and creative practice; like an annual physical or spring cleaning. After it goes well, we can determine how often we can offer them, subsequently, you can determine how often you want to participate.
BONUS: On May 3rd, the Friday before the intensives begins, I’m inviting participants that are interested to sign up for a 1-on-1 session with Alexis (there are 4 available). This is an opportunity to receive an oracle reading from Alexis related to your writing or another question that you may have related to your (creative) life. Intensive participants MAY also have the opportunity to schedule for VIRTUAL 1-on-1s for after the weekend is over.

The terms mother and daughter are not easily measurable categories. Maybe we don’t even know what it is to be a mother or a daughter; these categories, identifications that feel like they have always been here. Yet, they are evidence of life across time—the invisible and sometimes punished labor of making each other possible. These relationships are a repository for unreasonable expectations and offers us lessons that we truly do not remember asking for.
Join us for the Visionary Daughtering journey where we seek to discover the right questions for ourselves, for our now; like what happens when we search for (our mother’s) gardens and keep finding graves? And what would a visionary daughter look like where the abundance of that labor, the assumptions constructing the labor of daughtering, could be transformed into revolutionary potential that provokes freedom right at the site where bondage is supposed to be reproduced.

Presenting virtually would both require additional support/team members and change the dynamic and activities of the space. I look forward to supporting a virtual intensive in the future.
